While many tourist destinations can be expensive to visit, most of them have a fair share of free things to do as well. The Adirondack Mountain region is no different and by looking for some of the free activities that are held throughout the region, you can greatly enhance your vacation, while preserving your budget at the same time. Festivals are a tradition throughout the Adirondacks and many of them, such as the Balloon festival, offer free admission. There are also many activities for children that are free. Let’s look at other things we can find to do in the Adirondacks for free.
Hiking
Hiking is a fun family or couples’ activity that doesn’t cost anything and the Adirondack region is the perfect place to do it. With over 6 million acres and countless trails and mountains to climb, the Adirondacks is a hiker’s paradise. Camping and fishing are also available at areas all over the Adirondacks for those who like to rough it.
Free Fireworks
The whole family will enjoy the fireworks at Lake George, one of the Adirondacks most scenic vacation spots. Each Thursday, for about a month in mid-July through mid-August, the family can enjoy a free fireworks show. If you visit the Adirondacks around the fourth of July, you’ll gain free admission to any of a host of celebrations in the region.
Travel in the Summer for Free Events
For the most part in any region, most of the free events take place during the summer. Aside from museums, most community free events that take place are outdoors, and therefore, take place in the summer. You’ll find a myriad of free outdoor concerts and festivals in the Adirondack region during the summer months and even more events, like fairs, where children are free with the price of an adult ticket. Tourists who regularly visit the Lake Placid area look forward to the free summer concert series that starts at the end of June and goes on for seven weeks. Songs at Mirror Lake provides a free activity the whole family will enjoy. Just don’t forget your blankets or lawn chairs so you can sit back and enjoy the music. Visit one of only two certified, Olympic size luge training facilities in the United States when you visit Lake Placid, NY. You’ll be treated to a free tour and video and watch the athletes who are in daily training perfect their skill.
Visitor Interpretive Center
Just 30 miles from Lake Placid, you’ll find Paul Smiths Visitor Interpretive Center, which offers free admission, traveler information, and programs for children and adults. Miles and miles of trails offer scenic walkways as you learn about the Adirondack Park’s ecology and spend time soaking up the culture. The center is open year round, with the exception of Christmas Day and Thanksgiving.
